Revolution. A word that has been heavy on my mind concerning the move of the Lord. While we have been hearing much in past decades about pursuing the American Dream, within the context of the Kingdom, the Lord is causing a shift in paradigms. The new paradigm is a Kingdom Dream! It is embracing the Father's purposes and intents. I call it His Dream versus the American Dream.
The American Dream, which we often hear mentioned, is the pursuit of the things which we in the American Society have come to hold dear. That is having a home, two cars or more, several TV's, a retirement plan where we can retire by age 62 and never work again, plenty of money to buy all of the things we would desire, and be able to travel and do anything we want.
The pursuit of this has plagued the Baby Boomer Generation. Our parents wanted this for us because they had to work so hard to provide for us. They wanted us to have a better life in this way than they had. Their generation came out of the Great Depression and two World Wars. Their parents had seen the Dust Bowl days and had experienced a great amount of lack and hardship. The Baby Boomer Generation to some degree rejected this dream, thus you had the Peace Movement or Hippie Generation. Francis Schaeffer said that what happens when a generation hates the values of the former generation, they end up becoming worse. We have truly seen this. The Boomer Generation has not only swung back from the Hippie culture but have made and acquired great wealth, often without any other real reasons for living.
The Boomers of the Church have also adopted some of the values of world and the American Dream. It has influenced our children. These young adults are pursuing their profession, or dream, and the dream and their Church Life often are seen as two separate experiences. We have salvation and the assurance of Heaven on the one hand but on the other we have to work and labor and pursue the American Dream separately. The two are not really seen to be compatible other than we can give and tithe to maintain the Church ministry.
